I agree that more needs to be made explicit about the needs of all stakeholders when it comes to technology adoption on campus. In our experience, a lot of difficulty comes when adoption decisions are made without understanding user behavior and thinking about how the choice affects the overall student and faculty experience. One of the real benefits, however, of understanding the needs of administrators, faculty and students alike is that it can lead to choices that open up possibilities (like the BYU Learning Suite example) rather than constrain them unnecessarily.

That&#039;s a shame that the faculty member&#039;s IT department is blocking access. The new entrant into the LMS/Learning Platform market have a lot of work to do in building good relationships not only with faculty, but IT departments as well.

Really enjoyed your post yesterday on the issue of technology adoption and business model disruption, by the way. Have you seen Saul Kaplan&#039;s recent book, Business model Innovation Factory?]]></description>

My original post - which you&#039;ve referenced - was my small attempt to draw attention to the unique needs of the institution re: LMS; a topic that, to my knowledge, has not been discussed sufficiently. I couldn&#039;t agree more that the &quot;customer&quot; (the institution) needs to go to great lengths to understand and accomodate the needs of students and faculty. But we need to be conscious of the interests of all the stakeholders involved. 
It will be interesting to watch how companies like Canvas, Schoology, Lore and others fare in their ability to sell directly to faculty. Oddly, I received an email from a faculty member at a major research university earlier this week who had been directed by one of these vendors (best not mentioned) to contact me. Apparently, the central IT unit in this university (also best not mentioned) had blocked the faculty members attempt to use an unapproved LMS (one of the new, cloud-based systems).
